Why map this process
Verifying the equipment before any safety preparation begins is the map's first defensive move: a wrong range, transit damage or a tag that does not match the drawing gets logged and corrected at row 5 before the crew has committed to a permit and an install date. Discovering that mismatch after isolation and permit-to-work are already in place wastes exactly the safety preparation this map is careful to sequence after equipment verification, not before it.
Treating calibration as a full sub-process rather than a single checkbox is the map's second defensive move — row 11 explicitly runs the entire Instrument Calibration & Documentation SOP (as-found, adjust, as-left, certificate) as its own step, so commissioning never signs over a loop whose calibration record was abbreviated for the sake of the installation schedule. Making it yours
The troubleshoot-and-retest loop at row 13 returns specifically to the loop-and-function test (row 10), not to installation or configuration. When adapting this map for your own commissioning sequence, keep that narrow return point: a failed acceptance check usually means the loop or its configuration needs correcting, not that the instrument has to be reinstalled from the mounting up.
What to watch out for
- Do not commission a loop on the strength of first live readings alone. Row 14's note is explicit that commissioning compares those readings against expected process values before the loop is signed over — powering on and reading a plausible number is not the same as behaving correctly against the real process.
- Safety preparation (permit to work, isolation, PPE) belongs after equipment verification, not before. Placing it later in the sequence, at row 6, is deliberate: there is no reason to isolate a process and pull a permit for equipment that turns out to be the wrong part.
- The handover walkthrough (row 15) is not just a courtesy visit. It confirms the instrument's tag, range, calibration certificate and configuration match what the customer originally approved, and that they know how to read it — skipping straight to signature collection loses the one step where a specification mismatch would still surface before custody transfers.

Because calibration during commissioning is the identical procedure to a stand-alone calibration job — as-found reading, adjustment if needed, as-left reading, certificate — and duplicating those steps here would let the two drift out of sync. Referencing the Instrument Calibration & Documentation SOP as a single step keeps one authoritative version of that procedure.
What happens if the equipment on site doesn't match the drawing?

What does 'commissioning' mean here beyond powering the instrument on?
It means comparing the loop's first live readings against expected process values while it is live, and only then handing over documentation for sign-off. A loop that is wired correctly and calibrated correctly can still be commissioned incorrectly if nobody checks it against the real process it is meant to measure.
