What happened to Visio Data Visualizer

Data Visualizer was the Excel add-in that generated a Visio process diagram from a structured table — each row a step, with columns (Process Step Description, Shape Type, Next Step ID, Connector Label, Function, Phase) driving the shapes, connectors, and swimlanes. Microsoft announced its retirement in 2025, removed it from the Excel add-in store, templates, and ribbon in January 2026, and shut down the backing service on March 2, 2026.

The practical effect: existing Data Visualizer diagrams no longer load or refresh inside Excel. The Excel tables behind them are intact. Microsoft's recommended replacement is a Visio Plan 2 subscription with the Visio desktop app.

The replacement paths

There are realistically three:

Visio Plan 2 + Visio desktop — Microsoft's official path. Paid per-user subscription; diagram editing moves out of the spreadsheet and into Visio. Right if you need .vsdx output for SharePoint or Power BI pipelines.
Redraw in a canvas tool (Lucidchart, draw.io) — abandons the table-driven workflow entirely; every future process change is manual box-dragging.
