Why map this process

Commissioning is the point where a finished-looking installation either proves itself or doesn't, and the map is built around the one decision that actually carries the risk: energization approval. The row's own note is blunt about why — energizing a system that hasn't cleared insulation and continuity testing, or that hasn't been formally authorized, can destroy equipment or injure whoever is nearest the panel. That gate sits on the page as its own diamond rather than being folded into a general 'ready to commission' checkbox, because it is the row a customer under schedule pressure will ask to skip.

The map also separates 'tests passed' from 'approved to energize' as two different facts, and separates energizing from proving the system actually works under load as two different phases. 1. Installation complete, ready for commissioning
Confirms the handoff from the Marine Electrical Installation SOP: commissioning does not start on a general sense that the work looks finished, only on this specific sign-off that installation is complete.
4. Continuity and insulation test results **pass?**
Readings are checked against the values specified for the installed cable and equipment ratings, not against a generic pass/fail feel for the meter.
7. **Energization approved** by responsible engineer?
Energizing a system that has not cleared insulation and continuity testing, or that has not been formally authorized, can destroy connected equipment or injure whoever is nearest the panel when it goes live. This sign-off is required regardless of schedule pressure.
12. Diagnose and resolve fault
A tripped breaker, a motor rotating the wrong direction, a sensor reading out of range, logged with the symptom and the fix, not just closed out, so the commissioning report can show what was actually found.

Making it yours

When adapting it, keep the energization-approval decision as its own row even if in your operation the same person does the testing and the approving — the point of the row is the sign-off existing as a discrete, recorded act, not that two different people have to be involved.

What to watch out for

  • Don't let 'submit test results' and 'energization approved' become one row. The map keeps them separate on purpose: a hold on approval routes back to resolving the outstanding issue, which only works as a distinct branch if the request and the decision are two different steps a reader can see stall independently.
  • The functional-testing fault loop returns to 'diagnose and resolve fault,' not to the start of testing. If your version routes a fault straight back to energization, you lose the record of what was actually found and fixed, which is exactly the content the commissioning report is supposed to carry.
  • Don't skip the visual inspection before continuity and insulation testing. It's a cheap check that catches damage or an obviously wrong connection before an electrical test wastes time confirming something a five-minute look would have caught.

Who is allowed to approve energization on this map?

The map names a single 'responsible engineer' role for that decision, deliberately narrower than 'Engineering' as a department. The point isn't the job title — it's that your version should name one accountable role for the sign-off, so 'was this approved' always has one clear answer rather than a diffuse sense that the team was fine with it.

Does this SOP cover the installation work itself?

No — it starts from 'installation complete, ready for commissioning,' which the first row's note ties explicitly to the handoff from the Marine Electrical Installation process map. If you're mapping the install too, link the two rather than extending this one backward, so each map's decision gates stay specific to its own phase.

What if functional testing finds a fault that isn't fixable on site?

The chart as drawn assumes the diagnose-and-resolve loop closes on site, which covers the large majority of commissioning faults.
